Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve

Welcome to Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve. Experience a hidden gem, where abundant wildlife roam the plains, where the distant lion roars pierce the black dark of night and where the African sunset leaves an unforgettable memory. And all of this is just a few minutes' drive outside of Plettenberg Bay.

We offer the Baroness Lodge for accommodation. The lodge was built in 1822 by the Baron von Pletten, an early South African pioneer and conservationist, who used the lodge as his base to explore the diversity and wildlife of the then, untamed, African landscapes. Each of the spacious 10 double suites open out onto the rolling lawns, and the cool interior welcomes guests on the hot African afternoons. The suites have both indoor showers and lounging bathtubs, allowing guests to relax and unwind.

A cooling outdoor pool is available for the exclusive use of the guests or for those who are a little more energetic, a game of croquette on the lawn might be a good laugh. The outside boma is built over a dam and it is a haven for guests to enjoy sundowners and keep an eye on William, the resident hippopotamus. In the distance, the view from the boma is of Plettenberg Bay.

Plettenberg Bay Private Game Reserve is the Southern Cape's biggest game reserve and is home to Africas Big 5, being elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. The reserve is situated on over 2000 hectares of indigenous beauty and it is malaria free. There are over 150 different species of game and bird life.

Join us on a horseback safari to interact closely with the wildlife, or simply relax and enjoy a two-hour game drive in an open vehicle. The reserve welcomes children and it has a wonderful enclosed play area for kids to relax and stretch their legs, while being curiously watched by zebra and wildebeest. The coffee shop, bar facilities and curio shop are also open to the public.

  • "Loved it"

    21 November 2016

"From the moment we drove through the gate this place felt right. The lodges were just incredible, the setting was idyllic, with our 3 course dinner served in area right next to a lake which was gorgeous. The food was excellent and the price of extra drinks was so inexpensive. We followed a lovely nights sleep by a big breakfast and made our way to the safari drive. We were lucky that just the 2 of us were in the safari truck so it was very personal. The drive was not rushed and our guide was very informative. All in all just fabulous"

  • "Only a zoo"

"Good for children , they can enjoy giraffes and white Rhinos.Accommodation and food are not recommended for couples without Children. The dinner is under the South African standard, for the food quality, the food a mount and the Service .Some rooms have a nice furniture but show a disappointing and unacceptable Township-style tin roof. One two-rooms house has also a tin outer wall so the heat inside is terrible ( no a.c., only a noisy shaky fan). Furthermore, you must pay in advance, so it is impossible to get a refund. Never more."

  • "Fantastic"

"The service was perfect. All the staff were stunning, nothing was too much trouble. The rooms and game drives were very reasonably priced, and the accommodation was excellent. We will definitely be back again. Thank you for a wonderful experience."

  • "I've been raving about my stay!"

"My husband and I and our three year old son had a wonderful stay at Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve. The staff are incredibly warm and accommodating. The rooms are SO nice and we loved the home style cooking. The game rides really very informative too. I would definitely recommend this place and it doesn't hurt that it is just a 10 or 15 minute drive from beautiful beaches."

  • "What a GEM"

    03 July 2013

"What an amazing time we had. The staff were exceptional, the accommodation comfortable and spacious - really old world style, but perfect for the setting. Sitting in front of the log fire, drinking a good red wine and watching the giraffes and Nyala walk by across the lawn not 20m away - a really good way to kick back and relax. The game drive was also stunning, lots of animals, not at all skittish - mostly ignored the game viewing vehicle and Kiewiet the guide gave good commentary and ample time to take photos. We will definitely visit again, then to try the horseback safari (no Lion encounter allowed on horse back though)."

    "Very memorable"

  • "Extremely relaxing"

    08 November 2007

"Did not know what to think when we checked in at first due to the fact that it was so remote and so quiet. But we settled in once we met the other people staying there. It was extremely relaxing and staff could not be friendlier. Dinner was good but they did not have more than 3 bottles of wine in stock for all 6 guests that were staying there(lucky i brought my own).In saying this though, I would highly recommend this for anyone looking for an extremely relaxing night or two in what is close to an authentic safari lodge. We had just come from ten nights staying in four and five star hotels and this was a welcome break from all the formalities and luxurious trappings that come with staying in such hotels. The safari trips were very good and very close-up and the sight of a giraffe outside our window at three o clock in the morning was indeed something surreal. I would definitely stay here again but only for a night or two."
